For long-time married or committed senior couples, being together at home all of the time can be rewarding…or very irritating. If you’re not used to having each other home at the same time so regularly, it can be quite the adjustment for both partners.
However, being together at home brings a great opportunity to work on a few things that you may not otherwise do during a regular schedule. That includes rekindling the romance in your relationship.
Romance and intimacy is not just reserved for younger folks. In fact, seniors should be experts on these subjects just because of time served.
So, let’s list a few things that you can do as a couple during isolation to spruce up the romance:
• Dress up for each other: Pull out those dashing clothes, makeup, jewelry, perfume, cologne, ties…the works. The one person that you have decided to spend the rest of your life with should see you at your very best every once in a while. It’s also a bit difficult to get into the mood when you’re both in your leisure wear.
• Dinner dates at home: Set up a candlelit dinner with the fancy dishware and your favorite music playing in the background. Hold hands, talk about your years together, reflect on the day you first met, and so on and so forth.
• Cooking together: If you actually like cooking, plan and prepare a fun meal together. Even if you completely botch the meal, working together and creating something together is what matters.
• Board and card games: Pull out the board games, card games, or video games if that’s your thing and start a healthy competition or two.
• Watching a funny movie together: There’s nothing quite like reviving the romance than hearing each other laugh. This can be done simply through conversation or pulling out a movie that you both can laugh at.
• Dancing in the living room: Turn the slow music up and dance together. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a typical “high-school cuddle” two-step dance.
• Give each other massages: Pull out your kneading hands and give each other massages.
• Go on walks together: When the weather is nice, go on a neighborhood walk together. Hold hands, be in the present for each other, and talk about everything and nothing.
• Hang out in the bedroom for non-sleeping reasons: Lastly, don’t forget that your bedroom was designed for more than just napping. Sexual intimacy is still important, even as we age. If this is area in which you’d like to improve in your relationship, but you fear that ailments of old age have gotten in the way, go have a blatant discussion with your doctor or a specialist.
Every couple has different interests that make their relationships click, so you have to find the activities that will best suit to the both of you. Romance is a two-way street, so both partners have to make efforts and buy into the same goals in order for it to work. You’re a little older, but you can still show each other that the romance in your relationship is still alive and well.
